Ex-Fifa official: Referees told to be on red alert at Liverpool as Anfield crowd claim issued

Referees have to be extremely careful with the tactics deployed against Liverpool and the Anfield crowd may make the situation worse, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee delivered his verdict after Jurgen Klopp complained about Antonio Conte’s methods as Tottenham held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw on Saturday (7 May).

As quoted by Sky Sports after the game, Klopp claimed he “didn’t like” Spurs’ defensive methods as they are a “world-class” team capable of being more expansive.

As quoted by the BBC Sport on Monday (9 May), the 54-year-old rowed back on his comments and admitted he had been influenced by the outcome of the game.

Man City’s 5-0 hammering of Newcastle United on Sunday (8 May) means they are three points clear of the Reds at the top of the Premier League with three games left to play.

“Referees can only referee the game in front of them,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“When a team adopt those tactics which are often to reduce the amount of playing time, there are no doubts the crowd can raise the temperature in the stadium. The frustration then is built within the individual players.

“What the referee has got to do is not intervene with how a team is set up and how they are going to play, what he can do and all he can do is how he can deal with the team if they are breaking or stretching the laws.

“This is about interjections with the players, being proactive and not reactive. This, I’m afraid, is modern day football.”
