Ex-Fifa official verdict on Man City controversy as Jamie Carragher fumes
Keith Hackett has suggested Kieran Trippier’s challenge on Man City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is unlikely to be a red card in the near future.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Fifa and Premier League official pointed to the triple jeopardy rule change when explaining why.
Trippier was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Kevin De Bruyne in the second half of Newcastle’s 3-3 draw with Man City on Sunday.
However, referee Jarred Gillett overturned his on-field decision after consulting the pitch-side monitor on the advice of VAR official Peter Bankes.
On his personal Twitter (21 August), Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher claimed the challenge will be deemed as a red card offence in the future.
When asked by Football Insider if the ex-Liverpool and England defender was right in his prediction, Hackett said: “Referees apply the laws of the game.
“I understand the comment from Jamie Carragher.
“Let’s look at the example of when denial of a goalscoring opportunity was introduced. It was a red card offence but suddenly the players, the managers, the coaches all said it is triple jeopardy when it is inside the box.
“They moved it so that when it occurs inside the penalty area it is no longer a red card. We have seen a watering down of one particular law around the idea of red cards.
“I understand what Carragher is saying though. A lot of what he says is common sense. He gives a terrific insight into the game as a whole along with Gary Neville.
“They are becoming more aware of refereeing issues and how things can be improved. I wouldn’t discount Carragher’s view, it is part of the debate going forward.”
