Ex-Man United coach now odds-on favourite for West Brom job amid hiring development

Eric Ramsay has emerged among the favourites to be the next West Brom head coach after Ryan Mason was dismissed.

West Brom will be led by James Morrison against Swansea City on Sunday, after the Englishman was finally given the sack.

The Baggies had won just nine of 26 Championship games under the 34-year-old, and lost four of their last five.

Football Insider revealed in December that West Brom are interested in appointing Michael Carrick, with the former Middlesbrough manager available.

Carrick has since been linked to Manchester United following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, however, and could well be made unavailable in the coming days.

Eric Ramsay leads West Brom race amid Strasbourg twist

Ramsay’s coaching career began at Swansea City, where he took over as head coach of the Under-18s.

Roles at Shrewsbury Town and Chelsea would follow, before he joined Manchester United as an individual coach in 2021.

There, Ramsay caught the eye, rising in importance under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag before he ultimately left in 2024.

The 34-year-old also spent time as part of Rob Page’s staff with the Wales national team, but left only six months after he had arrived.

Gary O’Neil has been appointed manager of Strasbourg in the wake of Liam Rosenior‘s move to Chelsea, but Alex Crook reported on Thursday that Ramsay was among the candidates for the Ligue 1 club, too.

The Welshman has been in charge of MLS club Minnesota United for almost two years now, and has provided a transformative effect.

The 2025 season saw Ramsay’s side record club-record finishes for points, wins, goals scored, goals conceded, clean sheets and their longest unbeaten run.

He is at 4/6 odds of being named the next West Brom manager, leading Lee Carsley (7/2) and Ralph Hasenhuttl (6/1) according to one major bookmaker.

What Rob Page said about Ramsay will excite West Brom fans

Ramsay differs from many of today’s coaches because he did not enjoy a long career as a player before stepping into coaching.

The 34-year-old briefly played in the Cymru Premier for Welshpool Town before deciding to pursue coaching from the off at university.

Speaking after Ramsay had been added to his backroom staff at Wales, Page said: “Eric is arguably one of the best young coaches in football at this moment of time.”

West Brom have already had their experience of a young coach this season in Mason, however, and there will be hesitancy about hiring another in Ramsay.
