Ex-manager baffled by 'really strange' Everton moves after Gray update

Alex McLeish has claimed Everton have unearthed some “real bargains” in Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss admitted he was baffled the Toffees have not had to pay “top dollar” for the wingers.

As reported by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano today (July 21st), Gray has put pen to paper to complete a £1.7million (€2million) move.

It is said he has signed a three-year deal, with Everton holding the option to extend his terms by another year.

Meanwhile, the Toffees confirmed the captures of Townsend and Asmir Begovic on free transfers on Tuesday.

McLeish admitted Gray still had to prove himself in comparison to the former Crystal Palace winger.

However, he insisted it was “really strange” the pair could be signed for so little.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s been a little bit topsy turvy for Demarai.

“The Leicester thing didn’t quite work out. At £1.7million, these are real bargains Everton are getting.

“It’s really strange there’s not a top-dollar signing. I’m going to talk from the perspective of Everton fans.

They might think: ‘Wait a minute. We can’t say every signing’s going to be an inspirational acquisition.’

“I think the experience they have got in Andros and Demarai, it is really good. They’re players who know their way about Premier League pitches.

“Demarai has still got to show he’s got that consistency.

It will be an interesting signing to see how he can break through into that Everton first XI.”
