Ex-manager: My heart bleeds for Fredericks after West Ham injury update
Alex McLeish has admitted his heart bleeds for Ryan Fredericks at West Ham after a fresh injury “blow”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss insisted the 28-year-old made a “fantastic” start to the League Cup win over Manchester United before he was forced off.
Taking to his personal Twitter account after Wednesday’s game, the full-back admitted he was “gutted” to have picked up a “small injury”.
The 28-year-old set up Manuel Lanzini in the opening 10 minutes for the only goal of the League Cup clash.
However, Fredericks was replaced after just 17 minutes with what looked like a hamstring problem.
The former Fulham star has struggled for game time in the league so far this season.
As such, McLeish admitted it was a crying shame the defender missed out on a rare opportunity to shine due to injury.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “That’s a shame. I really feel for Ryan.
“He’s a player that I watched when he was at Fulham. There was an actual possibility that he could qualify for Scotland. I’m not quite sure what the full connection was. I’m sure the SFA guys will have the details.
“He looked ever so quick, he looked as if he was going to be in the Premier League star all day long.
“The injury was a real blow for what was looking like a fantastic performance.”

Fredericks has only played two minutes of Premier League action so far this term.
However, he did play the full 90 against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.
