Leeds United

Alex McLeish has admitted Rodrigo could be playing “catch up” at Leeds United if he misses the start of pre-season.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 30-year-old’s international twist may not be good news for his club.

As confirmed on Monday (7th June), Rodrigo was one of four players called up as an emergency contingency option for Spain after a positive Covid-19 case among the squad.

Luis Enrique named a young starting XI for Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Lithuania and 11 of those players have joined the alternative squad.

The 17 players, including Rodrigo, will train separately from the main squad and will not enter their bubble.

The Leeds man’s involvement could impact his pre-season preparations under Marcelo Bielsa.

Asked if Rodrigo found himself in a catch-22 between club and country, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. There’s no doubt about it.

“If he’s going to be back and ready for Leeds, that’s the big key. He’s probably got to be thinking more about his club.

“His situation, if he misses the start of pre-season then it’s gonna be a big, big catch up.”

Rodrigo suffered a handful of fitness problems during his debut season at Elland Road.

He managed to score seven goals in 28 appearances across all competitions.

The Spaniard, who has 25 Spain caps under his belt, has not featured for his country since October 2020.

Spain kick off their Euros campaign against Sweden on Monday (14th June).

They will also face Poland and Slovakia in their group.
