Alex McLeish has claimed finances will determine whether Mauricio Pochettino rejoins Tottenham this summer.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Daniel Levy would need to convince the Argentine of his willingness to spend this summer.
As revealed by Football Insider, Tottenham have made contact over a potential return for Pochetttino but their efforts are likely to end in disappointment.
The latest update from a Tottenham source to Football Insider on Wednesday afternoon is that Pochettino will not be returning bar an unlikely PSG U-turn.
The Telegraph claim the French giants have triggered a contract extension clause to strengthen their grip on the 49-year-old.
It is said Pochettino’s PSG deal now runs until the summer of 2023.
McLeish insisted finances would play a key factor in a potential return to Spurs.
Asked if Pochettino’s new contract length would be much of a hurdle from a financial aspect, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Exactly. The one thing Pochettino will want if he goes back to Tottenham Hotspur is the money to buy players.
“No doubt about it. That’s a fact. Any manager would that’s going into that kind of club.
“They’re a top club. The one thing you would want is your directors or chairman to back you in the transfer market.”
Pochettino took charge of PSG in early January.
He has won the French Super Cup and the Coupe de France since being appointed.
However, the French giants failed to win the Ligue 1 title for only the second time in nine years.
