Ex-manager thrilled as Leeds close in on 'bargain' Firpo deal

Alex McLeish has raved as Leeds United close in on a £12.8million “bargain” for Barcelona left-back Junio Firpo.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was blown away by the Whites’ exemplary recruitment record over the past couple of years.

As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday (June 29th), Firpo is set to join Leeds after Barca accepted a £12.8million offer

The latest from a Leeds source is that the left-back, joined Barca for £16million from Real Betis in 2019, is booked for a medical and expected to sign within days.

McLeish heralded Leeds’ recruitment since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road.

He suggested, despite the drop in value, Firpo could still be an excellent addition.

Discussing Firpo’s price, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “That would have worried me a couple of years ago.

“But due to the pandemic and due to play football clubs’ revenue being damaged big time, it’s no surprise to see one or two bargains.

“If Leeds have targeted this guy, you’d like to think that due to the past Leeds recruitment that they have got another good one.

“It’s not often, maybe they will get a couple wrong but they’ve not got anything wrong in the last couple of years, have they?”

Firpo still has three years left on his contract at the Nou Camp.

He was very much a backup option during the 2020/21 campaign, with just 18 appearances under his belt.

He looks set to leave Barca after playing a total of 41 times for the Catalan giants.
