Ex-PGMOL chief disagrees with Leicester City players after re-analysing Jordan Storey footage
Leicester City were adamant that Jordan Storey should have been sent off during their 2-2 draw with Preston North End on Good Friday.
With the Championship side 2-1 down in the 63rd minute, Patson Daka, who netted a brace at the King Power Stadium, was brought down when charging towards goal.
The ball proceeded to fall to Oliver Skipp, who failed to find the back of the net before referee Ben Speedie went back to book the Preston star for the challenge.
However, many of Gary Rowett’s players were far from happy with the decision, and the home fans soon began to turn against the officials.
Nevertheless, Keith Hackett was in agreement with the referee’s decision, believing a yellow card was correct in a tough Leicester match.
Keith Hackett: Jordan Storey should not have been sent off vs Leicester
For Leicester, while they were able to rescue a point, it was not enough to pull them out of the relegation zone after Portsmouth also picked up a draw.
However, they could have potentially picked up three points if Storey had been sent off in the second half.
| Position | Club | Points | Goal difference |
| 19th | Blackburn Rovers | 46 | -12 |
| 20th | West Brom | 44 | -14 |
| 21st | Portsmouth | 41 | -17 |
| 22nd | Leicester | 40 | -9 |
| 23rd | Oxford United | 40 | -15 |
| 24th | Sheffield Wednesday | -6 | -57 |
Looking back on the footage, Hackett was quick to agree with Speedie’s decision not to reduce Preston to 10 players, believing the covering defenders ruled out a red card sanction.
He exclusively told Football Insider: “Happy that the referee has made the correct call of a yellow card. Covering defenders rule out DOGSO.”
Did Leicester do enough to beat Preston?
Based on the stats, Leicester were highly unlucky not to come away with all three points on Good Friday.
The Foxes were dominant against Preston, having vastly more shots, more shots on target, a higher xG and more possession.
While the visitors’ keeper, Daniel Iversen, was on fine form, Leicester simply did not find their clinical finish to put their chances away.
| Match stats | Leicester City | Preston North End |
| Possession | 59.3% | 40.7% |
| Shots | 28 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 10 | 3 |
| xG | 2.01 | 0.41 |
| Touches in opposition box | 34 | 9 |
It was only Daka that looked capable of finding the net when the chance to score was presented to him, and this ultimately cost the club what could prove to be a vital victory.
Nevertheless, it was a point closer to safety, and if Leicester City can repeat this display on Easter Monday against Sheffield Wednesday, they will have a golden chance of getting a victory.
