Ex-PGMOL chief expects retrospective charge for Coventry star after what he did vs Norwich City

Norwich City took another step closer to Championship safety on Monday as they picked up a surprise 2-1 win over Coventry City.

Philippe Clement has completely turned Norwich’s form around since his appointment, with Anis Ben Slimane and Ali Ahmed both scoring to turn the match on its head in the second half.

However, for Coventry, it was yet another slip-up for Frank Lampard’s side, whose promotion hopes took another hit.

Now, it could be set to get a lot worse for the Midlands side, with Brandon Thomas-Asante facing potential disciplinary action for an incident during the match.

Keith Hackett: Brandon Thomas-Asante should have been sent off vs Norwich City

One key incident during the match came in the first half.

With the game still at 0-0, Thomas-Asante appeared to have elbowed Pelle Mattsson in an off-the-ball incident.

This was missed by both the referee and the linesman, with the 27-year-old forward remaining on the field without punishment.

As a result, when reviewing the footage, Keith Hackett exclusively told Football Insider that he should have been sent off.

He then insisted that he expects the Coventry man to be charged by the disciplinary authorities for the incident.

He said: “This is an act of Violent Conduct, the player using his arm/elbow against his opponent.

“It is evident that the referee and his colleagues have missed this incident.

“I therefore expect the disciplinary authorities to charge this player for this violent off-the-ball incident.

“The procedure that will apply is that the match officials will be asked if they witnessed the incident.

“They will send a video clip to the referee asking what action he would have taken if he had seen the clash.”

What has Frank Lampard said about the result?

For Lampard, the result is yet another blow.

While they still remain eight points clear of third, Middlesbrough are now just three points behind the leaders.

Coventry had looked to have returned to their best going into the match, after victories over both Leicester City and Millwall.

However, the performance was once again a disappointment on Monday.

Speaking to Sky Sports on 26 January after the game, Lampard was quick to express his disappointment with the result.

He said: “We gifted them their goals in my opinion. We could have scored more ourselves but the clinical areas at both ends of the pitch we didn’t get right.

“We didn’t start the second half well and it gave them momentum.

“Liam Kitching has been fantastic for us this season, I’m not going to hold it against him. It’s football, you can make those sorts of mistakes. We’ll stick together.

“I was under no illusions when we were more points clear that it’s a difficult league and there are a lot of tough games to come, for us and others. We’ll just focus on ourselves.

“The players know they fell below their standards, we made mistakes we don’t normally make. We have to correct them.

“We’re not given opportunities, you have to take them, tonight we didn’t.”
