Ex-Premier League ref blown away by ‘outstanding’ Tierney after Arsenal controversy

Keith Hackett has heaped praise on Paul Tierney for his “outstanding” performance in Arsenal v Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-FIFA and Premier League referee claimed Tierney was the referee of the weekend.

Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea at the Emirates as Romelu Lukaku ran riot on his second debut.

He netted the opening goal and played his part in the build-up to Reece James’ second.

The striker was fouled but Tierney played advantage before the ball found its way to James.

“It was an absolutely brilliant advantage by Paul Tierney that resulted in Chelsea’s second goal,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“It was just a fantastic piece of refereeing.

“If I had to choose a referee of the weekend it would be Paul Tierney. He’s understated, he’s very calm in his approach.

“I believe this year he’s improved his movement and positioning.

“In that opening goal, there was also some good work by the assistant because it was a tight offside call and he was correct.

“Tierney’s performance in that game was outstanding. He looked calm, was on top of things and managed the players correctly. I loved his positioning, his positioning and movement was absolutely top drawer.

“This was the lighter touch with players from both sides behaving well and allowing the referee to do his job. Tierney was top drawer.

“It was probably the best game I’ve seen Tierney referee.”

Arsenal are still yet to score or earn a point this season after their loss to Chelsea.

They lost their opening fixture to Brentford and will now travel to Manchester City next weekend.
