Ex-Premier League referee: Celtic set for major problem as ‘sensational’ Kyogo footage emerges

Kyogo Furuhashi was not offside in the build-up to his first goal as Celtic beat Hibs 2-1 in the League Cup final, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed VAR may have chalked off the goal and that could cause a major problem in Scottish football.

In the 52nd minute, Kyogo was played in behind by a Callum McGregor pass before taking a touch and finishing past Matt Macey.

It came less than a minute after Hibs’ opening goal and Kyogo scored his and Celtic’s second 20 minutes later to secure Ange Postecoglou’s first trophy as manager.

Speaking on Premier Sports, Chris Sutton claimed the timing of Kyogo’s run for his first goal was “sensational” and the first touch was “incredible”.

“I’m not going to give that as offside,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what happens when VAR comes into Scotland because potentially they’re going to have a problem that England experiences if they don’t train the guys properly and don’t implement it with broader broadcast lines.

“I wouldn’t rule that out offside. I support the match officials decision.”

Kyogo was at the centre of an offside controversy earlier this month in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Hearts in the Scottish Premiership (2 December).

The 26-year-old scored the only goal of the game when he prodded in an Anthony Ralston cross but appeared to be in an offside position.

Referee chief Crawford Allen told BBC Sportsound, via the Sun (4 December), that it was “probably” offside.

In other news, Celtic have been tipped to get ‘multiple deals done’ after a ‘brilliant’ update.
