Ex-Premier League referee: Conor Gallagher victim of major injustice as controversial Crystal Palace footage analysed

Crystal Palace should have had a penalty during their 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday (30 April), according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed Oriol Romeu should have been punished for a foul on Conor Gallagher inside the Southampton penalty area.

As shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day programme, the 22-year-old eased past Mohammed Salisu before advancing into the Saints box.

Romeu came across him and appeared to catch his ankle before he went down and appealed for a spot-kick.

Crystal Palace’s appeals were waved away with the scores level at 1-1.

Wilfried Zaha came off the bench to score the winner for Palace in stoppage time as they leapfrogged Southampton up to 12th-place in the Premier League table.

“They were unlucky not to have a penalty kick,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I think there was a nibble and he was fouled and Palace should have had a penalty kick.

“He’s put his right leg across Gallagher, that’s a penalty.

“The one thing about Gallagher is he tries to stay on his feet, he’s one of those players. For me, Palace are unlucky not to get a penalty kick in that situation.”

Gallagher has been a smash hit while on loan at Palace from fellow London club Chelsea.

He made his England debut earlier this season and has eight goals and three assists in 30 Premier League games for Palace this term.
