Ex-Premier League ref digs at 'careless' Leicester star Tielemans as controversial footage emerges

Leicester City star Youri Tielemans can have no complaints after he gave away a key penalty in Belgium’s 3-2 Nations League defeat to France.

That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the incident that proved decisive in the semi-final.

Belgium raced into a 2-0 lead by half-time but ultimately fell to defeat to France.

Karim Benzema scored just after the hour mark before Tielemans gave away the penalty.

He was dispossessed by Paul Pogba as France launched a counterattack.

Tielemans and Antoine Griezmann went for a loose ball in the penalty area as Tielemans appeared to kick Griezmann’s foot onto the ball.

The referee waved away France’s appeals for a spot-kick before reviewing the footage on the VAR monitor and changing his decision.

Kylian Mbappe scored the resulting penalty before Theo Hernandez completed the comeback in the 90th minute.

After analysing the footage of the decision with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, Hackett said: “There’s contact and it’s a careless challenge.

“It’s a penalty and good work by the VAR. There’s an exaggeration by the opposition player that doesn’t help.

“I’d go with the penalty. He can’t have any complaints with that one.”

France went on to win the Nations League final with a 2-1 victory over Spain with goals from Mbappe and Benzema.

Meanwhile, Belgium finished the competition in fourth place after losing their third-place play-off game 2-1 to Italy.
