Ex-Premier League referee issues ‘fantastic’ claim as ‘big’ Celtic v Rangers news confirmed

Keith Hackett has insisted Nick Walsh’s appointment to Rangers’ trip to Celtic on Saturday (3 September) is “fantastic”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed fans will always find a reason to criticise the officials ahead of the Old Firm derby.

The SFA confirmed earlier this week (30 August) that the 31-year-old will take charge of the first game between the two sides of the season at Parkhead.

Walsh did not referee an Old Firm game last season but he was the man in the middle when Rangers beat Celtic 4-1 at Ibrox in May 2021 as they marched to the title.

He sent off Callum McGregor that day for two yellow card offences.

Saturday’s game will be the first time he has been in charge of a game between the two clubs with fans in attendance.

“I think it’s fantastic that this guy is 31 years old and has got to this level,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Remember his first derby match was in 2021 so this is not his first, he’s done it before. In that game, he sent off Callum McGregor.

“Ultimately, at the end of the day, Bobby Madden is down in England and he had it twice last year if I remember. I think, generally, they’ve got to try someone new.

“It’s a big game assignment and there’s a lot going off in the media but that’s always the case. One of the teams has a process.

“Give him a chance. Let’s see how the new lad does.”

Celtic

Celtic go into the game two points clear of Rangers after five games of the Scottish Premiership season.

Both clubs are in Champions League action next week as the Hoops host Real Madrid on Tuesday (6 September) while the Gers travel to Ajax the day after.

In other news, a Rangers expert fears Celtic as a “heavy beating” claim is made.
