Ex-Premier League referee: Liverpool and Man City know they are damaging football after ‘unusual’ talks
Liverpool and Man City have recognised their tempestuous relationship is not good for the image of the game, according to Keith Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee delivered his verdict after the two clubs came together in an “unusual” move.
The Manchester Evening News reported last week (16 December) that both clubs have vowed to establish a positive relationship and fan groups met last month ahead of the Carabao Cup game on Thursday (22 December).

In their last meeting – Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Anfield on 16 October – there were a number of incidents that marred the game.
It was alleged that coins were thrown at Pep Guardiola, while Liverpool condemned chanting and graffiti in the away end mocking the Hillsborough disaster.
City also complained about their coach being damaged as they left the ground.
“I think they are taking a positive action to set an example and are doing that well in advance of the game,” Hackett told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.
“Both clubs recognise that their image is tarnished when they are faced with the problems of warring spectators.
“It’s unusual, isn’t it?
“At the end of the day, we expect spectators to behave but some of these things happen outside at the perimeter of the ground. I suspect they are not actual supporters of the football club but people coming to create problems.
“I think it’s good that the two clubs recognise they have a responsibility and it might mean the managers get on a bit better in the technical area. They are both passionate and their players are passionate.

“Let’s hope some good comes from it and I’m sure some good will come from it. I think it’s a positive move.
“It’s only the Carabao Cup on Thursday so a lot will depend on what sides the two clubs put out.”
