Ex-refs chief scared for serious injuries as Chelsea star should have been sent off vs Newcastle – ‘I’m sorry…’

Enzo Maresca’s side were fortunate not to go down to 10 men during the early stages of Chelsea’s draw with Newcastle United on Saturday.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that Alejandro Garnacho should have seen red following a clash with Jacob Ramsey on 20 December.

Andy Madley made some questionable decisions at St James’ Park as Eddie Howe‘s side let slip a two-goal lead following two first-half goals from Nick Woltemade, inspired by Reece James.

Howe remains under pressure as Newcastle boss, especially after throwing away victory against the Blues, but matters could have been simpler for the Magpies had the referee taken appropriate action.

In the 27th minute, Garnacho, who scored a brace against Cardiff City midweek, went crashing into Newcastle’s No.41, picking up an early yellow card. Hackett, however, believes it deserved more.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Garnacho’s challenge, the former referee, scared for serious injuries, said: “Garnacho challenged with his foot raised and raked it down his opponent’s leg.

“I’m sorry, but if we are going to allow this challenge to be considered only as ‘reckless’, then we are going to see more time in the treatment room rather than playing.

“This, for me, is serious foul play, and he should have received a red card.”

How do Chelsea fans feel about Garnacho now?

Garnacho’s move to Stamford Bridge was certainly met by mixed reactions, but just a few months into his career in West London, supporters are finally beginning to appreciate the Argentine.

Despite a game with no goal contributions, the overall consensus appears to be a positive one, having gotten into some good areas, but he did waste a few chances at St James’ Park.

After 90 minutes, the 21-year-old winger had created two chances and unleashed a total of five shots [FotMob], but many were just left frustrated, though he was not the only weak point during the game.

Cole Palmer, who is still getting back to full fitness, appeared to drift through the match, while Malo Gusto was possibly the Blues’ worst performer on the day.
