Ex-Spur names four ‘unhappy’ Tottenham stars who inspired Mourinho exit

Alan Hutton has suggested a quartet of unhappy Tottenham stars led to Jose Mourinho’s sacking last month.

The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Portuguese manager’s treatment of Dele Alli would have turned other players against the 58-year-old.

As quoted by the Independent, Dier claimed Alli had been “working really hard” in training and lauded his quality out on the pitch.

Sunday’s 4-0 win over Sheffield United was the first time in eight games the attacking midfielder had started a Premier League match.

Mourinho was sacked in mid-April after a disappointing season.

Hutton suggested frustration from the likes of Alli, Dier, Steven Bergwijn and Gareth Bale led to the manager’s departure.

Asked if he thought the Spurs squad were unhappy with Mourinho’s treatment of Dele, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “100 per cent. Absolutely. I mean I think ultimately that’s one of the reasons why he did go.

“I think there were so many players within that dressing room that would have been desperately unhappy. Dier was his go-to guy at the start and then just fell off, wasn’t playing under him.

“Obviously Dele Alli was pushed to the side. Bergwijn was brought in in January but was asked to do a completely different role than he was used to. Gareth Bale was the same. It just looked like an unhappy dressing room.

“Now that he’s left, a little bit of a cloud has lifted. There’s boys playing with more freedom, Dele Alli’s coming back in the fold. Yes, he didn’t play well but you can’t expect him to be a 10 out of 10 already. He’s missed so much football.”

Alli has started just three times in 11 Premier League appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Dier started 18 of Spurs’ opening 19 league games before dropping out the side.

He played three times in 11 matches before returning to the starting XI.
