Frank McAvennie has claimed Leeds United are “better to watch than Man City” and will be a huge force next season – thanks to master coach Marcelo Bielsa.
The former West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has been impressed with how Bielsa learned from his mistakes.
Football Insider understands Leeds are confident of securing Bielsa and his assistants to another 12-month agreement.
Bielsa‘s contract expires in a few weeks as he only signed a one-year extension when his previous deal expired last summer.
Leeds finished ninth after their first season back in the top flight.
However, in the early weeks of the season, Leeds were leaky at the back and struggled to defend set-pieces.
Bielsa then changed his approach and the Whites’ defensive record improved.
McAvennie has been blown away by Bielsa and Leeds this season and tipped even better things next year.
“I hope Bielsa signs,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Leeds have been the best team to watch in the Premier League this season. That’s saying something when you have Man City there.
“I think Bielsa has learned. They got battered off a few teams early on.
“I think he realised you can’t go gung ho all the time. He’s tightened up the defence so they still have men back when they fly forward.
“It’s great that he’s learning. They were good this year and they will be even better next year.”
Bielsa has now spent more time at Leeds than any other club during his career.
He joined the club in 2018 and quickly became a popular figure at Elland Road.
