Ex-striker tells Man United to complete 'title-winning' Varane signing after Sky update

Kevin Phillips claims Harry Maguire can forge a title-winning defensive partnership with Raphael Varane if he joins Manchester United this summer.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the defender can be a key piece of the yet to be completed Red Devils’ jigsaw.

On Friday, (2nd July) Sky Sports claimed Man United have held initial talks with Real Madrid over signing Varane.

The French defender, 28, has one year remaining on his Los Blancos contract.

He played every minute of France’s Euro 2020 campaign before they were knocked out by Switzerland in a last 16 penalty shootout.

Phillips insists Varane could improve every member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defensive unit.

When asked if Maguire and Varane could form a title-winning partnership, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “Yeah, they can.

“It’s an area they need to improve. They need someone with that quality.

“Victor Lindelof did alright last year but Varane is that upgrade Man United need to get back up there.

“That jigsaw is finally getting built. Jadon Sancho is coming in now. If they can get Varane in he can form a partnership with Maguire.

“He can bring that experience from Real Madrid. A back four of Luke Shaw, Maguire, Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is very solid.

“Some of the lads need a better season next year and Varane can help them with that title-winning defence they need.”

On July 1st, The Red Devils announced an agreement in principle for the transfer of Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

Man United finished second in last season’s Premier League, 12 points behind Manchester City.
