Gabriel Agbonlahor has hailed Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as “one of the best keepers in the league”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the legendary former Villa striker insisted the £20million fee the club paid Arsenal for the Argentine in the summer as “a massive bargain”.
Martinez kept his fifth clean sheet in 10 Premier League games on Saturday as Dean Smith’s side beat their Midlands rivals Wolves 1-0.
Martinez made seven saves at Molineux, six more than his counterpart Rui Patricio, according to WhoScored.
“I can’t believe it,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
I was watching the game and some of the chances I was like ‘how has he saved that?’
“There was one from Podence I think when he smashed one really low and with some goalkeepers, it was a goal. But with Martinez he’s so big, so tall and can get down so quick that he’s going to make those saves with his height and agility.
“All game he made saves and that’s what wins you games in the Premier League. We go on about the attacking players and stuff but if you’ve got a great keeper it’s going to give you that chance to win games.
“We’ve seen so many teams now spend a lot of money on a goalkeeper. Before a decent goalkeeper would do and they’d rather spend money on attackers. Dean Smith has proved how important he’s going to be.
“My heart was in my mouth when he went down with a head injury because I thought I don’t want him to go off with concussion.
“You don’t realise how good he is with his feet as well and how quick he looks to play out after making a save. He’s up and playing on the counter-attack.
“For me he’s a massive bargain for £20million. I’m sure he goes down as one of the best keepers in the league.”
