Alan Hutton believes that Alfredo Morelos could fire West Brom to Premier League survival if they manage to sign him from Rangers.
The former Aston Villa and Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims that a proven goalscorer is what the Baggies need to ensure they avoid the drop following their return to the top flight.
As revealed by Football Insider, West Brom have registered their interest in the 24-year-old as Slaven Bilic looks to bolster his attacking options this summer.
The Baggies have already secured a return for Callum Robinson following his loan spell at the Hawthorns, while this site has revealed the club are in advanced talks over Huddersfield’s Karlan Grant.
However, Hutton, who is predicting a difficult campaign for Bilic and his men, believes a signing of Morelos’ calibre could see them survive.
“I think West Brom may struggle this year depending on the signings that they bring in,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“To play in the Premier League is obviously massive but does he want to go to a team that are going to struggle? I think the chances are high that they will.
“They’ve been a bit of a yo-yo club for a couple of years now so it has been difficult now but they’re trying to bring in a striker that scores goals, we know he scores goals so that’s for me, the key, to staying in the Premier League.
“If they get hold of him and he scores 15 goals, that could be the difference between them staying up and going down.”
Morelos netted 29 goals and contributed 10 assists in 47 games for Rangers last season, although only one of those strikes came after the winter break.
He has netted twice in the Gers’ opening four Premiership games this term.
