Exclusive: Arsenal well placed to agree Viktor Gyokeres deal

Arsenal have the profit and sustainability (PSR) capacity to agree a deal for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider

The Sweden international has been linked with several top clubs over the past few months following his outstanding performances in the Portuguese capital.

The 26-year-old, who signed from Coventry City for around £20million in July 2023, has registered 43 goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances this season.

The Athletic reported on 30 March Arsenal are developing a strong interest in Gyokeres after he’s long been admired by their new sporting director Andrea Berta.

Manchester United are also keen on Gyokeres after he previously played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon before the latter moved to Old Trafford in November last year.

The striker, who is under contract until 2028, is understood to have a release clause worth around £85million.

There have been questions asked about Arsenal’s PSR capacity after they failed to make any new signings in the January transfer window.

However, sources have told Football Insider the Gunners have a “huge” PSR surplus and will be able to pay Gyokeres’s release clause if they wish to do so this summer.

Arsenal striker priority revealed after £75m payout

Arsenal are keen to strengthen their attacking options after lacking a cutting edge in front of goal at times this season.

Kai Havertz is their top scorer on 15 goals, but the Germany international has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a hamstring injury.

Mikel Arteta’s side, who sit 12 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool in second place, are currently 36 goals down on the 91 strikes they registered in the Premier League last season.

The north London giants’ only realistic chance of claiming silverware this season is in the Champions League, where they will face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals this month.

Arsenal have already landed a guaranteed £75million windfall from the competition as they look to book their place in the semi-finals.

The 23-year-old’s current contract is set to run until 2027 and the Gunners are ready to hold talks in the coming weeks.

There were initial fears the England international could miss the rest of the season through injury, but he scored on his return to action in the 2-1 victory over Fulham on Tuesday (1 April).
