Exclusive: ‘Arsenal will use rule change to complete marquee signing this summer’
Arsenal and other Premier League clubs will get the chance to strike early-summer deals in June after a rule change brought in by top-flight chiefs.
It was confirmed last week that the window will open early between 1 June and 10 June due to the new Club World Cup – which Man City and Chelsea will compete in.
Mikel Arteta‘s side have already made a key move ahead of the off-season – with Andrea Berta succeeding Edu Gaspar as the club’s sporting director.
The Gunners sit second in the Premier League but are set to fall short in their title challenge for the third straight season.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted he expects Arsenal to take full advantage of the new window.
Arsenal could sign striker in newly-created window, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he expects Arsenal to “sort their striker situation” in the new window.
The Gunners have struggled to deal with key injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus this season.
Player | Goals |
Kai Havertz | 15 |
Bukayo Saka | 10 |
Ethan Nwaneri | 8 |
Gabriel Martinelli | 7 |
Mikel Merino | 7 |
Wyness claimed Arsenal chiefs will be “war-gaming” the early-June window after the announcement last week.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I expect Arsenal to move quickly in this new window to sort their striker situation.
“That would help them head off any competition.
“Clubs who have got key positions to fill, like Arsenal, will strike early.
“It’s going to bring a whole different situation to the window and there will be a lot of people war-gaming these things to see how they should act.
“It’s a new twist and the strategy will be important. It’s a fascinating new element.”

Arsenal get green light to sign Cunha
Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (2 April) that Arsenal interest in wantaway Wolves star Matheus Cunha has not gone away ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 25-year-old only signed a new contract at Molineux in February but has already announced publicly that he wants to move on in the off-season – giving the green light to interested parties.
Liverpool are also considering Cunha as a potential Darwin Nunez replacement.
