Exclusive: ‘Aston Villa land £70m windfall after points deduction concerns’

Aston Villa were dumped out of the Champions League last week after a valiant two-leg performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final.

As per Uefa documents, Villa earned more than £45million in prize money alone despite losing in the last eight of the competition.

The Midlands giants have struggled to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in recent seasons but have continued spending in the transfer market to remain competitive despite the threat of a potential points deduction.

Villa reported a loss of £85.4million in the 2023-24 campaign – down from £119.6million in the previous season – with clubs only permitted to lose £105million over three years.

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed his old side “deserved some luck” after their aggressive stance in the transfer market.

Aston Villa deserve luck after ‘aggressive’ transfer strategy, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Villa are likely to bank around £70million all-in from their exploits in the Champions League this term.

The Midlands giants are in another fight for qualification and sit seventh in the Premier League table after losing 2-1 away at Man City on Tuesday (22 April).

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Villa were unlucky.

“It’s a shame, but they didn’t do it.

“I think they’ve earned around £45-50million in prize money. By the time you add in gate revenue, hospitality and all the extras – you’re talking close to £70million.

“It’s been a very good season for Villa in terms of revenue, and they deserved it.

“They acquitted themselves well, and it’s made everyone around the club very happy.

“Great memories, and the board will be very happy with the bank balance.

“They’ve been aggressive in the market, so they deserved some luck. We know they’ve been right on the PSR line, so I’m glad they’ve landed at least one of their bets.

“They’re now in another big battle for the Champions League ahead of next season.”

Villa have the option to sign Rashford from Man United for £40million when his loan deal ends this summer.

It is believed Unai Emery’s side will need to be creative yet again in the summer window to ensure they do not breach financial rules in the Premier League and Europe.
