Exclusive: Aston Villa make Tyrone Mings decision as concerning data emerges

Aston Villa are planning to sell Tyrone Mings this summer as the centre-back is no longer a first choice, sources have told Football Insider.

The former England international’s contract at Villa Park expires in the summer of 2027 but the Midlands giants are keen to drum up interest in the coming months.

Mings joined Villa from Bournemouth in 2019 and has been a key part of the club’s re-emergence in the Premier League and their transformation into a Champions League-calibre club.

But injuries have been rife for the defender since the cruciate ligament tear he suffered on the opening day of the 2023-24 season.

Mings has made just 13 appearances across all competitions in this campaign, and has spent several months on the injury table.

Tyrone Mings given green light to leave Villa

Having made 200 appearances since his 2019 arrival, Mings will undoubtedly be fondly remembered by supporters should he leave.

The defender was key throughout the Championship play-offs, just months after his arrival, and he was largely ever-present for Villa’s first years back in the Premier League.

Mings served as club captain for a year between 2021 and 2022, before John McGinn took the armband.

Even now, he continues to come up with key contributions for Unai Emery‘s side. The 32-year-old got up well to head on Leon Bailey’s corner in last week’s 1-0 win over Brighton, with the 86th-minute winner eventually going down as a Jack Hinshelwood own goal.

Emery has always opted to use Mings when he is fit, with both Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof on the bench for last week’s game.

However, the Spaniard will be aware that he cannot rely on the defender forever, and it appears that this summer will be the window in which they part ways.

What Mings said after signing his contract extension

Villa handed Mings his contract extension in June 2025, in what was a clear show of faith and loyalty to their defender.

The 32-year-old was still facing regular periods of absence after returning from such a big injury, but the Villans were keen to place their belief in him.

Speaking after signing the new deal: “In the time I’ve been at the club we’ve had quite the journey. Every player signs for a club hoping they can contribute positively towards something successful and my belief that we can achieve something extra special is stronger than ever.

“I thank the fans, the manager, the staff and the players for their unwavering support both on and off the pitch through one of the toughest periods of my career. I’m sure that next season will be our best one yet!”

Mings may well have been right about this season, but it could also be his last at Villa Park.
