Exclusive: Aston Villa set for multiple financial rule breaches
Aston Villa have faced issues complying with the Premier League’s spending rules as they continue to battle for a European place this season.
Under the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), top-flight clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
Villa posted a club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their turnover increased from £217.7million in 2022-23 to £275.7million, while their losses fell from £119.6million to £85.4million.
Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman all moved on before last year’s accounting deadline to help them avoid a spending breach.
The Times reported on 4 April Villa are exploring selling stakes in their women’s team to help them comply with the PSR regulations.
Chelsea sold their women’s team to owners BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for last season.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider selling their women’s team wouldn’t help Villa comply with Uefa’s financial regulations moving forward.
Borson previously told Football Insider Villa have already breached Uefa’s financial rules following their heavy spending.
Clubs in European competitions were required to keep spending on player wages and fees to 80 per cent of revenue as part of the squad cost ratio (SCR) rules for the 2024 calendar year.
Villa’s wages increased from £194million to £252million last season.

Aston Villa facing ‘player swaps’ issue
Borson insisted Villa are likely to have breached Uefa’s financial rules for this season and could do so again in 2025-26.
He told Football Insider: “The problem that Villa have got is that the women’s team sale won’t help them on the Uefa side of things.
“They are going to fail as we’ve talked about with Chelsea.
“They are going to fail 2023-24, 2024-25 and they’re probably going to fail next year as well, and the women’s team sale wouldn’t help them in that.
“They have got these issues about player swaps.
“They have more player swaps because most of their business that they did in the summer included an element that probably will be disallowed by Uefa.
“They did deals with Everton. They did deals with Chelsea. They did deals with Juventus.
“All of them involved players moving both ways, which if you look at the Newcastle example, suggests that those will be largely disallowed by Uefa.”

Aston Villa stance revealed after Man City’s Morgan Rogers swoop
Football Insider revealed on 9 April Aston Villa are confident of keeping Morgan Rogers this summer despite potential interest from Manchester City.
Man City have been linked with a shock move to bring the 22-year-old back to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Sources say three-cap England international Rogers is happy at Villa Park after signing a contract running until June 2030 last year.
Villa currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, while they were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG on Tuesday (15 April).
