Exclusive: Aston Villa star Tommi O’Reilly agrees Shrewsbury move

Aston Villa midfielder Tommi O’Reilly has agreed to join Shrewsbury Town on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

A full agreement has now been reached between the player and both clubs, and the deal is set to be confirmed soon.

O’Reilly, 20, has come through the Villa academy and was handed an extended contract in January, taking his time at the club through to 2028.

The midfielder made just one senior appearance under Unai Emery last season, featuring in their final Europa Conference League group game against HSK Zrinjski Mostar.

O’Reilly joined Aston Villa’s academy aged seven, and was handed his first professional deal in 2022 after impressing then-manager Steven Gerrard.

The midfielder has since won the FA Youth Cup with the under-18s, and captained the under-21s side against senior teams in the EFL Trophy.

He boasts an impressive record for Villa’s under-21s as he scored three goals and provided eight assists in nine games from midfield last season.

O’Reilly spent the second half of last season on loan at Spanish third-tier side, and Villa’s sister club, Real Union Club.

However, his time in Spain was underwhelming as he made just two appearances and was an unused substitute on seven occasions.

Shrewsbury finished 19th in League One last season, narrowly avoiding relegation, and are looking to bolster their squad and add quality to their midfield.

The opportunity to join the League One side will see O’Reilly given his first taste of regular first-team football, with those at Villa Park holding high hopes for his development.
