Exclusive: Aston Villa’s Filip Marschall agrees to join Stevenage

Aston Villa goalkeeper Filip Marschall has agreed to join Stevenage on a permanent deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Marschall spent last season on loan at League Two side Crewe Alexandra, and is now set to make the step up to the third tier.

A full agreement has been reached between the two clubs, with confirmation of the move expected imminently.

The 22-year-old has failed to break through into the first team at Villa, and will now bolster Alex Revell’s goalkeeping department at Stevenage ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Stevenage secure England youth international

Earlier this month (8 July), Football Insider exclusively revealed that Port Vale and Blackpool were interested in Marschall, but in the end Stevenage have won the race for his signature.

The shot-stopper joined Villa as a 14-year-old and rose through the academy ranks before making his senior debut for the club in 2023, against Bosnian side HŠK Zrinjski in the UEFA Conference League.

Marschall also has experience in the England youth set-up, making two appearances for the under-19s side.

Last season, the young keeper played every single minute out on loan at Crewe in League Two, helping Lee Bell’s side to a 13th-place finish.

As a result of his impressive performances in the fourth tier, Marschall penned a new contract with Villa in December 2024, but is now leaving the club just eight months later.

Villa make decision on Watkins’ future

Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins’ future at Aston Villa remains up in the air heading into the final month of the transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Aston Villa have privately let it be known that Watkins, 29, would be sold at the right price, but have been surprised by the lack of interest from Premier League rivals.

Villa expected clubs would submit big offers for the England star this summer after turning down a £60million bid from Arsenal late in the January transfer window.

Tottenham and Man United have been keeping tabs on the England international’s situation at Villa Park, but have not made concerted moves.
