Exclusive: Atletico Madrid plotting shock move to re-sign Matheus Cunha

Atletico Madrid are plotting a shock move to re-sign Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, sources have told Football Insider.

Cunha’s Molineux future is in doubt amid the club’s financial issues and exodus of prize assets in recent transfer windows, with Max Killman and Pedro Neto having departed in summer.

The La Liga giants are interested in re-signing the Brazil international, who originally joined Wolves on an initial loan deal in January 2023.

Six months later the Premier League side made that move a permanent one for £35million, and since then he has been a regular feature in the team.

That brought an end to his time playing for Atletico Madrid, where he had played from 2021.

The 25-year-old has scored eight goals and provided three assists for Wolves this season across 17 appearances in all competitions.

Matheus Cunha’s future at Wolves is uncertain

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Cunha comes amid uncertainty regarding Cunha’s future at his current club.

Football Insider revealed that the forward is set to turn down offers of a new contract from Wolves due to growing interest from other top clubs.

Football Insider had reported that Wolves are keen to extend his contract in a bid to ward off interest from other teams, with his current deal having two years left to run.

Atletico Madrid might be forced to wait until next summer to bring Cunha back to Spain though, as Wolves are reluctant to let him leave mid-way through the season due to being in a relegation battle.

Wolves

Cunha is currently embroiled in controversy after being charged with misconduct by the FA for his actions after Wolves’ recent defeat against Ipswich on Sunday (14 December).

Cunha struck a member of the Ipswich coaching team in the face with his elbow before ragging his glasses off, with the Brazilian having until Thursday (19 December) to respond.
