Danny Mills has tipped Toby Alderweireld to partner Davinson Sanchez at the heart of the Tottenham defence against West Ham on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds United and England full-back delivered his verdict after Jose Mourinho issued an update on Eric Dier.
The Portuguese confirmed in his pre-game press conference that the versatile defender is a doubt for the visit of the Hammers.
The 26-year-old pulled out of the England squad before their game against Demark on Wednesday after picking up a hamstring injury against Belgium.
Dier and Sanchez have started Spurs’ last three Premier League games in which they have picked up seven points from a possible nine.
Alderweireld partnered the England international in their opening day defeat to Everton but has not featured in the league since.
Mourinho bolstered his defensive ranks with the addition of Swansea City defender Joe Rodon on domestic deadline day but is unclear as to whether he will be involved on Sunday.
Asked by Football Insider whether he thinks Alderweireld and Sanchez will start against West Ham: “I expect so.
“Mourinho now has got most of the team sorted. He’s still tinkering around with the centre-half partnership, he’s still just trying to work out what that means and how it looks.
“The rest of the team is pretty much sorted.
“He’s shown time and time again that he’ll make that work.
“He’ll be working on that to make sure that is ready for the weekend.”
Alderweireld featured 33 times in the Premier League last season including starting their last six games in which they were undefeated.
In his five years in north London, the 31-year-old has played 205 games across all competitions for Tottenham.
