Darren Bent claims that Brighton defender Shane Duffy could be the “perfect” signing for West Ham this summer.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Hammers could do with a no-nonsense centre-back to bolster their backline this summer.
Bent believes that Hammers boss David Moyes needs some grit and steel at the heart of his defence and suggests that Duffy could be the answer in east London.
Bent told Football Insider: “Sometimes that’s what you need and I know it’s fashionable to have these defenders that can play and pass and look pretty but first and foremost, with my defenders, I need them to defend.
“I need them to get their head on things, win tackles, clear the ball when it needs to be cleared, not try and be clever so I think that might just be perfect for them.
“I’m sure David Moyes is looking at the situation – defensively they weren’t great last year – so someone like a Duffy, if you’ve got someone in the box who’s going to head it, a bit like Ciaran Clark at Newcastle, all he wants to defend.
“Sometimes you need that. People have got carried away, they look at Pep Guardiola teams and Klopp’s teams and even back to Man United’s teams with Rio (Ferdinand), all these teams want to pass it out and look pretty.”
Duffy has 96 Premier League appearances under his belt to date, as well as 33 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Moyes was able to call upon the likes of Issa Diop, Fabian Balbuena and Angelo Ogbonna as his centre-back options last season.
In other West Ham news, Alex Bruce has been left wowed by a “£15million bargain” the Irons could pull off.
