Darren Bent claimed Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has lost his way at Old Trafford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Premier League attacker stated that he thought Lingard was a key player for United but just lacked confidence at the moment.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder scored his first goal of the season against FC Astana in mid-week but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dropped him from his starting line-up for the clash with Aston Villa.

Bent revealed that he thought Lingard wasn’t being helped by United’s inconsistent form this season and acknowledged that Solskjaer not knowing his best team made things difficult.

When asked about Lingard slipping down the pecking order, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah I was with him at Derby a few years back, and he always showed flashes.

“He was on the bench, then he went back to United and really took it by storm, he scored big goals in big games and he became a regular for England.

“But he’s kind of lost his way a little bit which comes from a lack of confidence and Man United have been inconsistent this season, so that’s not helped.

“Ole is still working out his best team, best players and it’s hard for him.

“Hopefully he can build on his goal (vs Astana) as that will give him a lot of confidence as I think he is a key player for United, and he can do it.”

Lingard has played a total of 18 times across all competitions this season and has failed to score or register an assist in his 10 league outings so far.

The Englishman previously rose through the youth ranks to become a regular in United’s first-team and he is contracted to stay at Old Trafford until 2021.
