Darren Bent has been left raving over Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier for his “outstanding” performances so far this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League striker has lauded the 20-year-old for his ability with the ball at his feet.
The French shot-stopper has established himself as Marcelo Bielsa’s first-choice goalkeeper since he came into the starting XI late last season and turned his loan move from Lorient permanent over the summer.
Having conceded seven goals in the Whites’ first three league games, he continued his ever-present record in the Premier League against Manchester City on Saturday.
Bent admits he gets nervous watching Leeds play out from the back but has lauded Meslier for the confidence he brings to his defenders.
Bent told Football Insider: “He has been outstanding, at times when they play out I’m a bit like: ‘Ooooh,’ but the goalkeeper is so comfortable in possession it calms the rest of the back four down.
“Well played to him, he has impressed me a lot this season but that’s Leeds as a whole. They’ve got good players playing really, really well, they all seem to be fitting in relatively well.”
Meslier has made 15 appearances for Leeds so far after a ban for Kiko Casilla gave him an extended run in the side last season.
The Spain international is currently acting as the young shot-stopper’s deputy and has played just twice since he was suspended back in February.
In other Leeds United news, Watford have made an approach to sign an Elland Road star signed in 2018.
