Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Darren Bent has claimed the international break has come as a “blessing” for Leeds United after several injury blows at Elland Road.

The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has suggested the Whites will be able to get some of their top stars back to full fitness after an “exciting” start to the season

Speaking after the 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, Bielsa confirmed to BBC journalist Adam Pope that midfielder Jamie Shackleton missed out after picking up a muscle injury in training.

The 21-year-old joined midfield mainstay Kalvin Phillips, centre-back Diego Llorente and Rodrigo on the sidelines, with the latter of the trio in self-isolation after a positive Covid-19 test.

However, Bent believes the break from domestic action will work in the Whites’ favour with all their absentees.

Asked about the opportunity to deal with the mini injury crisis that now includes Shackleton, Bent told Football Insider: “Exactly, you’ve hit the nail on the head there – everybody who’s got little niggles and that can use this international period now to, to recoup and get your best players back fully fit.

“It gives them an extra couple weeks, that’s a kind of a blessing for certain teams like Leeds. It’s been a really, really exciting start to the Premier League season, so much more exciting what we’ve seen in previous seasons, I think it’s only going to get better.

“For a team that Leeds, Leeds are one of the reasons why people have been so excited by the way they’ve gone about their business and not worried about anybody, they’ve not feared anybody, they’ve just had to go and I think that’s what we love to see.”

Leeds currently sit 15th in the Premier League table after three wins, a draw and four defeats.

Bielsa’s men will return to Premier League action with a home tie against Arsenal.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been tipped to sign a new midfielder after big injury reveal.
