Darren Bent claims something must have gone on behind the scenes at Leeds United to see Pontus Jansson leave Elland Road this summer.
The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that he thought the Swedish defender was “Leeds through and through” after seeing him visibly upset following the club’s play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County at Elland Road.
Jansson left Elland Road this week for Championship rivals Brentford after three years at Leeds, the Bees breaking their transfer record to secure his signing.
Bent could not hold back his shock when asked about the Swede’s switch, claiming something must have happened between the player and Marcelo Bielsa for his exit to have come about.
“I am surprised, he didn’t play in the play-offs and when they lost to Derby in the semi-final, you could see how much that hurt him,” Bent told Football Insider.
“He was sitting on the pitch by himself, everybody else had gone in, he was that hurt by it. When I saw that I thought: ‘He’ll be back next season.’ I would never, ever guess that he’d have left. I thought he was Leeds through and through but that just shows you, maybe something happened behind the scenes.
“Maybe Bielsa’s told him you don’t feature in my plans – but it’s a great signing for Brentford!”
Jansson, 28, made a total of 120 appearances for Leeds after joining on what was initially a loan from Italian side Torino, with 41 of those outings coming last season.
His final game came in the 3-2 defeat to Ipswich Town on the last day of the regular season, left as an unused substitute in their play-off second leg loss to Derby.
