Darren Bent suggests that West Ham star Declan Rice could replace either N’Golo Kante or Jorginho if he were to move to Chelsea this summer.
The former Tottenham and England striker, in an exclusive interview with Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the France international is the “best in the world” when it comes to defensive midfielders.
As reported by Sky Sports, the Blues have set their sights on a potential raid for the Hammers’ 21-year-old, with a new midfield enforcer a priority signing for Frank Lampard.
Bent questions why Chelsea would need another deep-lying midfielder in the first team but insists Rice would be up to the task if he were to move across London.
Bent told Football Insider: “It would be a fantastic move for him.
“You look at that position, if they’re looking at Declan Rice, does that mean Kante’s surplus to requirements or maybe Jorginho?
“Kante, if you play Kante in that position he’s the best in the world at that position as we well know, but even Frank’s not playing him there either so why, you don’t know.
“For Declan Rice it would be a fantastic move for him and one I’m sure he’d thrive on. I’m pretty sure he’d rise to the challenge.”
Rice, who has four years left on his West Ham contract, actually left Chelsea when he was a youth prospect, forging his career in east London instead.
He has played 100 times for the Irons, while he also has seven England caps to his name.
In other West Ham news, it can be REVEALED the club are ready to let a senior talent leave for nothing in the summer.
