Paul Robinson has hailed Aston Villa duo Dean Smith and John Terry as well as five blockbuster deals for the club’s “outstanding” start to the season.

The former Spurs and Leeds United goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, hailed the Claret and Blue “a completely different outfit” this season after a 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

The narrow victory over Nuno Espirito Santo’s side saw the Villans climb to 10th in the table while they still have two games in hand over the Premier League’s top-seven.

The Athletic revealed on Wednesday that Dean Smith’s side are the only team in the division who are pressing more than last season.

There were a number of high-profile arrivals at Villa Park in the summer, Ollie Watkins, Matty Cash, Bertrand Traore and Emiliano Martinez all arriving on permanent deals while Ross Barkley joined on loan from Chelsea.

When asked by Football Insider if he was impressed at how quickly Dean Smith had got his new signings working, Robinson said: “Definitely.

“It is OK making signings, it is about making the right signings and then getting the players to buy into what you want to do.

“Villa are a completely different outfit to what they were last season. They only just stayed up last season but now they are doing outstandingly well. It was a great result for them against Wolves.

“It has taken Dean Smith and John Terry time to get that team where they want.

“The signings of Watkins and Cash as well as the new deals for Grealish, Mings and McGinn have really helped.”
