Exclusive: Big update on West Ham’s spending power after done deal

West Ham are in a “strong” financial position to agree new signings this month following the arrival of Graham Potter, sources have told Football Insider.

The East Londoners confirmed on Wednesday (8 January) Julen Lopetegui has been sacked after less than eight months in charge, having recording just six victories in 20 Premier League matches.

Football Insider revealed on 5 December West Ham likely agreed a fixed compensation fee with the 58-year-old when he signed his two-year deal last May, ensuring they won’t have to pay out all of his contract.

Potter has been appointed as the club’s new manager after agreeing a two-and-a-half-year deal at the London Stadium.

The 49-year-old takes over with West Ham sitting 14th in the Premier League table, seven points above third-bottom Ipswich Town.

London Stadium chiefs are keen to strengthen their squad this month as they look to climb the table in the second half of the campaign.

Sources have told Football Insider West Ham have plenty of profit and sustainability (PSR) capacity to make new signings and shouldn’t need to let players go before they can agree any January deals.

West Ham have opened talks to sign new midfielder in January

Lopetegui was heavily backed by West Ham’s hierarchy in the summer transfer window after making nine new additions.

The club spent more than £120million on Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Luis Guilherme, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Guido Rodriguez and Wes Foderingham, while Jean-Clair Todibo and Carlos Soler joined on loan.

Former West Ham senior scout Mick Brown exclusively revealed to Football Insider West Ham have opened preliminary talks to sign a new midfielder this month.

The London side are understood to be interested in landing deals for Chelsea stars Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka.

Everton

Although matters on the pitch haven’t been great for West Ham this season, their finances are in good shape.

The club published their accounts for 2023-24 on 30 December, revealing their turnover rose from £236.7million in 2022-23 to a club-record £269.8million.

West Ham also managed to go from making a £17.1million loss in 2022-23 to last season recording a £57.2million net profit, which was largely driven by the club-record £105million sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal in July 2023.
