Exclusive: Birmingham City open preliminary Kwame Poku talks

Birmingham City have opened talks to sign Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku, sources have told Football Insider.

The 23-year-old has rejected a club-record Peterborough contract and is set to leave when his current deal expires this summer.

Birmingham are working on a deal to sign him as a free agent this summer – although there will be a compensation fee payable as he will be under 24 at the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

Negotiations are underway with Poku’s representatives as the Blues look to strike a deal.

That is despite missing a big chunk of the 2024-25 campaign with a hamstring injury.

The left-footed winger played for Peterborough in the Championship back in the 2021-22 campaign and has since excelled in the third tier.

Poku, who made his Ghana debut in March 2021, played 90 minutes against Birmingham at Wembley as Posh beat the Blues 2-0 in the EFL Trophy final.

Birmingham plan for Championship return

Chris Davies’ Birmingham have already sealed promotion to the Championship at the first time of asking – and have wrapped up the League One title.

The Blues spent lavishly on the likes of Jay Stansfield, Christoph Klarer and Willum Thor Willumsson last summer.

Birmingham have scored a league-high 73 goals and have lost just three times in the third tier this season.
