Birmingham City have told midfielder Corey O’Keefe he is free to find a new club this summer, Football Insider can reveal.
The midfielder, 21, has been informed by the Championship giants’ hierarchy he will not be getting a new deal to replace his contract that expires next month.
A Birmingham source has told Football Insider that the club’s decision has come as a surprise to O’Keefe and his camp.
The Republic of Ireland youth international has had an impressive campaign on loan at League Two outfit Macclesfield.
The versatile midfielder has made 28 league starts among 36 appearances in all competitions and been one of their star players in a difficult campaign.
Macclesfield were 23rd in League Two and just one place and three points above the drop zone before the season was suspended in mid-March.
O’Keefe had been hopeful that would be enough to secure a new contract at his parent club.
The Blues academy product has made only one senior appearance for the club he joined in his mid-teens.
He gained first-team experience with a previous loan spell at non-league outfit Solihull Moors last season.
This is shaping up as another summer of major change at Birmingham after the appointment of Pep Clotet failed to have the desired effect.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Spaniard’s position is under major threat after he steered the team to 16th in the Championship prior to the lockdown.
The Blues hierarchy have discussed removing Clotet after a disappointing campaign failed to result in a sustained push for promotion.
In other Birmingham City news, it can be REVEALED why Clotet is fighting to save his job.
