Exclusive: Bournemouth’s Iraola wrong in surprise claim on Aston Villa ace Ramsey
Keith Hackett has given his verdict on Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola’s claim that Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey should not have been sent off in the clash between the two sides.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the 23-year-old can have no complaints about his dismissal late on in that match.
Aston Villa beat Bournemouth 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday (10 May) to boost their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League this season.
They did however have to do that the hard way in the final minutes of the game after being reduced to ten men.
Jacob Ramsey sent off after second yellow card
The visitors were lucky not to find themselves a man down early on after Tyrone Mings’ elbow on Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.
Instead, they would go ahead on the stroke of half time when Ollie Watkins became Aston Villa’s record all time scorer in the Premier League.
That proved enough to win the game, despite Ramsey being sent off with ten minutes of normal time remaining.

The winger had already been booked in the first half after reacting angrily to a challenge, and was then shown a second yellow by referee Stuart Attwell after bringing down David Brooks on the counter attack.
Speaking after the game, Bournemouth boss Iraola had suggested that he did not feel the Aston Villa man should have been booked a second time for that challenge.
Hackett though, believes that Ramsey was always going to find himself being dismissed in the circumstances.
Aston Villa sending off correct despite surprise Andoni Iraola verdict
After being asked by Football Insider what he made of the decision to send the winger off and those comments by Iraola, Hackett said:
“The truth is that when you’re on a yellow card already, that is the type of challenge that you have to hold back on.
“I know it’s difficult for a player, but he effectively tripped the player and he’s stopped a promising attack, and that is a yellow card offence.
“It might look harsh because the outcome is red. But I don’t think he’s given the referee any scope to actually not give a yellow, and it’s Stuart Attwell.
“Of all the referees in the list he’s the one that is consistent in terms of his law application, throughout his career I’ve seen him punish these types of offences with a yellow card.
“So if you’re the Bournemouth manager, you needed to have done your homework on the referee, and if you’re the player and you’re on a yellow card, don’t commit a daft challenge like that.”
Aston Villa will next be in action, without Ramsey, when they host Tottenham at Villa Park on Friday night (16 May).
Bournemouth saw their hopes of European qualification dealt a blow with this defeat, and they will next be in action away at Man City on Tuesday 20 May.
