Alex Bruce has suggested that Leeds United defender Barry Douglas may turn down the chance to leave Elland Road this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds centre-back believes an impressive pre-season could put the left-back back into Marcelo Bielsa’s thinking for next season.
As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds are willing to listen to offers for the 30-year-old this summer as he heads into the final year of his contract.
The Scotland international has struggled for regular game time under Bielsa and has fallen behind Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski in the pecking order at left-back.
However, Bruce believes that Douglas might look to force his way back into the reckoning, suggesting a good pre-season could change the manager’s mind about letting him go.
Bruce told Football Insider: “He might want to see his contract out, come back and try to make an impression in pre-season because sometimes that can happen.
“You can have limited game time, come back to pre-season, really have a good pre-season, play well, catch the manager’s eye and the next minute you’re in his thought process. Seasons change from year to year.
“It’s a difficult one. It’s one of those where I could see him leaving, yes, to go and get game time but if he doesn’t then it’s up to the lad to try make an impression and try to claim his place.”
Douglas has just 13 appearances under his belt for Leeds this season, his last league appearance coming back in January.
Since joining from Wolves back in 2018, he has played a total of 39 times across all competitions.
In other Leeds United news, Bruce claims a £10million player made a mistake leaving Elland Road.
