Alex Bruce believes Barry Douglas will have a big part to play for Leeds United in the Premier League if he signs a contract extension.

The former Leeds centre-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the 30-year-old is a valuable member of the squad and will have plenty to offer in the top-flight.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay reports that the Leeds board are prepared to offer the Scotland international an extension to stay at Elland Road, with his current deal set to expire in 2021.

Bruce insists that Leeds will need a bigger squad to cope with the demands of the Premier League and that Douglas can play an important role for Marcelo Bielsa despite his lack of game time this season.

Bruce told Football Insider: “When you play in a good team, you’ve got every chance – when you’re winning games, it’s easier to go into a team, believe me, that’s winning most weeks than the opposite way round.

“To find your form in a good team is something that every player would want to do and it’s nice to see him putting a couple of good performances in.

“They’ll need a healthy squad to deal with the Premier League’s demands and he’ll play a big part because it will be a totally different outfit to what they’ve been used to over the past few years.

“They’ll be doing all they can to get their squad ready to make it suitable and ready to cope with the Premier League.”

Douglas has made just five league starts for Leeds this season, with Stuart Dallas Bielsa’s preferred option at left-back.

The Scottish ace does not have any Premier League experience under his belt, having been sold by Wolves after helping the club win the Championship in 2018.
