Exclusive: Burton set to sign Bristol City winger on permanent deal
Burton Albion are set to sign Bristol City winger Jonny Smith on a permanent deal, Football Insider can reveal.
The 23-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan with League One side Swindon Town.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider Bristol City have cancelled his loan at Swindon so he can make the move to Burton.
Smith was signed by former manager Richie Wellens at Swindon and after initially impressing he has struggled since Wellens’ departure.
He has started just five games and not provided a goal or an assist since the 40-year-old swapped the County Ground for Salford City at the beginning of November.
Liverpool-born Smith is now set to swap Swindon for Burton with both clubs fighting for their lives at the bottom of League One.
Town have won just once in their last 10 games and sit third from bottom but remain just two points from safety.
Albion are rock bottom of the third tier and are seven points adrift of Northampton Town in 20th place.
The Brewers have had a busy transfer window after re-appointing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as manager at the beginning of the month.
They have already added Tom Hamer, Dillon Barnes, Josh Parker, Sean Clarke and Hayden Carter during this window.
This site broke the news yesterday Burton are also set to sign Preston North End defender Josh Earl on loan.
In other news, Football Insider can reveal Liverpool have set their sights on signing USA captain Aaron Long by Monday’s transfer deadline.
