Alex Bruce believes sides chasing promotion in the English Championship will be fighting for the capture of Celtic winger Jonny Hayes if he leaves on a free transfer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League defender believes the 32-year-old will have a number of contract offers to choose from south of the border should he become a free agent.
The four-cap Republic of Ireland international’s contract is set to come to an end next month, leaving him free to leave Parkhead for nothing.
Bruce believes that Hayes will be a man in demand this summer and suggests he could make a move to a promotion-chasing side for next season.
Asked if Hayes has what it takes to play for a top-six Championship side, Bruce told Football Insider: “Yeah, I think there will be a few. He’s a decent player, he’s got good pace, he’s got a nice left foot.
“If he does leave, he’ll be one where there will be a lot of clubs who want to take him. He’s still got plenty left in the tank, whenever I’ve seen him play. It wouldn’t surprise me if he does get a decent move if he leaves on a free.”
Hayes already has seven Championship games under his belt, having played for Leicester City in the second-tier back in 2007.
He has also played in England’s League One and League Two, although the majority of his club appearances have come in the Scottish top flight.
