Exclusive: Celtic suffer £9m hit after devastating blow

Celtic have missed out on more than £9million following their Champions League exit, sources have told Football Insider.

The Scottish champions progressed through the revamped league phase of the competition after earning 12 points from their eight group games.

That set up a clash against Bayern Munich in the knockout round play-offs for a place in the last 16.

The Bundesliga giants secured a 2-1 victory at Celtic Park in the first leg last week, leaving the Glasgow club’s European hopes hanging by a thread.

Nicolas Kuhn handed his side a surprise lead on 63 minutes in the second leg on Tuesday (18 February) before an injury-time equaliser from Alphonso Davies ensured it would be Bayern progressing through to the last 16.

Football Insider revealed on 23 January Celtic landed a guaranteed £38million windfall from the Champions League prior to their clash against the six-time champions of Europe.

Uefa documents show Brendan Rodgers’s side could have earned a further £9.1million with a victory over Bayern.

Celtic have agreed record-breaking summer deal

The Parkhead club’s attention now turns back to the domestic competitions after their Champions League exit.

A treble-winning season could be on the cards after already securing the Scottish League Cup trophy following their penalty shoot-out victory over Rangers in December.

Celtic currently sit 13 points clear of their Old Firm rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and are through to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, where they will face Hibernian next month.

Rodgers’s side made two new additions in the January transfer window after re-signing Jota from Rennes for £8million and Jeffrey Schlupp on loan from Crystal Palace.

Celtic have already lined up a new signing for the summer after Kieran Tierney has agreed a record-breaking deal ahead of his return to Parkhead.
