Exclusive: Celtic working on new Mathias Kvistgaarden deal
Celtic have begun working on a deal to sign Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden in the summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the 22-year-old has been a long-term target at Parkhead after their initial attempts to sign him in the summer.
Following the departure of Kyogo Furuhashi during the January transfer window, the signing of a new striker has become a priority for Brendan Rodgers.
The boss is thought to be unhappy with the club’s failure to land a replacement and is now the driving force behind their efforts to sign Kvistgaarden.
This comes after Football Insider revealed on 4 February that Celtic had planned to sign the striker in a late-January deal but were outpriced by Brondby.
In the meantime, Jota’s return to the club from Rennes and consistent sources of goals from elsewhere within the squad are expected to ease their concerns.
Celtic plot Mathias Kvistgaarden offer after Brendan Rodgers twist
Kvistagaarden has become a priority target for Celtic ahead of the summer window, as he has emerged as their number-one option to strengthen up front.
He has scored ten goals and provided four assists in 15 Superliga games so far this season and, at 22 years old, represents the possibility to make profit from his eventual sale.
The striker fits the ideal profile Celtic have been looking for in the market, and his price tag is expected to drop to a reasonable level in the summer.
Brondby were determined not to lose their main front man so late in the window, and eventually priced the Hoops out of a move as they were keen not to overspend.
However, they now plan to revisit the deal for the forward and have already stepped up their efforts behind the scenes to ready an agreement.

Brendan Rodgers makes summer transfer plan, ‘he is not happy’
Rodgers is said to already be putting plans in place ahead of the summer transfer window after growing unhappy with Celtic’s activity in the January window.
After Kyogo’s exit, they had planned to bring in a new striker, but were left with just two new arrivals in Jota and Jeffrey Schlupp.
As a result, there is a feeling they will be left short in terms of a regular goalscorer for the rest of the season, putting a dent in their ambitions both domestically and in Europe.
