‘There are two big developments’ – Tottenham well placed to agree £200m signings

Tottenham’s transfer spending this summer has been dictated by a £150million windfall of prize money.

That is according to football finance expert Dan Plumley, who exclusively told Football Insider that there were two main driving factors behind Spurs’ transfer splurge this summer.

Tottenham seemed to be missing the opportunity to capitalise on qualifying for the Champions League when the first Club World Cup-inspired transfer window came and went without any incomings in North London.

However, after finally making the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou and hiring Thomas Frank as his replacement, Spurs got the ball rolling by re-signing Mathys Tel on a permanent deal.

And following that move, the momentum has continued as Tottenham have added Mohammed Kudus, Kota Takai, whilst also making sizeable offers for Morgan Gibbs-White and Ilya Zabarnyi.

Thomas Frank, Champions League motivating Tottenham spend

Speaking to Football Insider exclusively, Plumley, a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, explained that Tottenham’s recent activity in the transfer window was inspired by the windfall the club had received from qualifying for the Champions League.

The finance expert also highlighted the importance of providing a competitive squad for Frank, who has been tasked with improving the club’s standing domestically after a dismal 2024/25 campaign.

Plumley said: “I think a lot of this activity at Spurs is being driven by the Champions League.

“The new manager, of course, is important as well, and he will want some say on changing that squad moving forward.

“Those are the two big developments with Spurs at the minute. They’re in that ballpark of, if you are going to make a big splash in the transfer market for one of those clubs, you’ve got to be talking like £150-200m spend just to get players in the market that you would expect to be competing for.

“So that kind of stacks up with that, and if you look at some of the fees we’ve seen, I think the best way to caveat that is that that’s the Champions League money and that’s what it can do.

“It can enable you to go and spend £100-150m because that’s your prize money that you’re going to get guaranteed for being in that competition this season.”

Tottenham make Mikey Moore decision

Whilst there has been a huge focus on the incomings in North London, several players are expected to depart this summer.

Sources have told Football Insider that Tottenham have reluctantly agreed to allow Mikey Moore to leave on loan this summer.

The 17-year-old is in need of more first-team minutes next season, something that Spurs will struggle to guarantee for the England Under-19 international.

However, Frank may be inclined to find a back-up option on the left, given that Son Heung-min’s time at Tottenham seems to be nearing its end this summer.
