Rennes have made a last-gasp move to include Olivier Giroud as part of the deal for Chelsea to sign Edouard Mendy, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
Mendy, 28, underwent a medical yesterday and is set to move to Stamford Bridge after a £22million deal plus add-ons was agreed.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Rennes wanted Giroud in part-exchange for the goalkeeper but this was rejected by the Blues who preferred a straight cash agreement.
This site revealed last week that Mendy’s transfer to the London-club was being held up by Rennes’ late request for two senior players to move in the opposite direction.
The French club wanted defender Fikayo Tomori as well as World Cup winner Giroud.
Blues boss Frank Lampard yesterday confirmed that Mendy was having his medical ahead of a move to London and revealed the importance of Chelsea performance and technical adviser Petr Cech in the deal.
He said: “Petr was important in that because goalkeeper is a very particular position and he was the best in the world at that position for a long time so he’s certainly had a big say in this situation from my point of view.”
Mendy joined Rennes for just £3.6million from Reims in the summer of 2019 and his value has rocketed after a standout campaign for the Ligue 1 club.
The French shot-stopper is being signed to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga who has struggled to live up to his £71million price tag – still the most expensive for a goalkeeper of all time.
Mendy will become Lampard’s seventh summer signing following the arrivals of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Malang Sarr, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.
